Simone de Beauvoir and Djamila Boupacha
Simone de Beauvoir defended Djamila Boupacha in a Le Monde editorial in 1961. Djamila had been wrongly arrested and tortured by French colonial authorities in Algeria during the French/Algerian War. In her defense of Djamila, Simone de Beauvoir noted, “When the leaders of a country accept that crimes are committed in its name, all citizens belong to a criminal nation.”
